Alan Ball, the youngest member of England's 1966 World Cup winning football team, died of a suspected heart attack yesterday as he attempted to put out a fire in his back garden.Ball, 61, was found dead by firemen called by neighbours to extinguish the blaze. His body was on the lawn beside a bowl he had been using to douse flames on a compost heap.The midfield player, who was just 21 when he won the World Cup, Bally FLIP played for Everton, Arsenal and Southampton, was capped 72 times by England and was awarded an MBE in 2000.He also managed several clubs, including Manchester City and Southampton.Ball, who lived alone following the death of his wife Lesley, 57, from ovarian cancer three years ago, had been burning rubbish in the back garden of his 500,000 bungalow home at Warsash, Hants.It is understood he was tidying up in preparation for a move to a new house close to the horse racing stables of his friend and former Southampton and England colleague Mick Channon, at West Ilsley, Berks. He placed ashes from the fire on the compost heap, which smouldered as he watched the Manchester United Champions League game on television.Shortly after midnight, he noticed that the heap was on fire and ran out with a bowl of water and it is thought he suffered a heart attack. He had been due to play golf yesterday in aid of the Wessex Heart Foundation. He is the second member of the 1966 team to die. As a father, he tried to be strong and help us through it."He said his father was a great family man and had recently been running around his garden playing games with his grandchildren. He was fit and energetic and had not appeared to be in poor health."The world of football has lost a great man," he added.
